So you're ready to explore the world of plants! You've probably had your eye on a plant here and there or you maybe even received a planty gift or two but you're ready to commit to becoming a plant parent! Excellent decision!
First things first, choosing the right plant for you. Before committing to any plant there's a few questions you should ask yourself.
- How much time do you have to care for your plant? There are plants that thrive off neglect. These plants include, Pothos and Bamboo (Both can live in soil or water ) Sanseveria (Also known as Snake Plants and Mother in Law Tongue) Zamioculcas Zamiifolia (Also known as ZZ plant) and much much more! There's also countless plants that lovessssss to be the center of attention such as Peace Lillies and the infamous Fiddle Leaf Figs! Some plants can be a bit finicky however, don't let that intimidate you! With the right care instructions and climate even a beginner can keep their plants alive and healthy!
- How much light will your plant receive? One of the biggest misconceptions is you need lots of sun for your plants to thrive. In the rain forest, the trees can sometimes be so dense that often times they block sunlight causing the plants below to adapt to low light conditions. Some low light plants include Peace Lilies, some ferns, Calatheas, and of course our favorite trio, Pothos, Snake Plants, and ZZs! There's plenty of low lights to choose from as well as bright light plants! The key is knowing your placement and light intensity. But, if you find yourself in a space with little to no light, grow lights and lamps are a cheap and effective way to give your plants the light they need!!
- Do you have pets or small children? This is probable THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION OF THEM ALL! Some plants can be toxic especially if ingested. Plants such as Philodendrons, Dieffenbachias, and Rubber Trees can cause nausea, swelling, rashes, itching, and in extreme cases even death. It's extremely important to know if the plant you're getting is toxic or not. If the plant you desire is in fact toxic, it's still possible to keep your love ones safe. Placing your plants in an area that's unreachable is a great way to be proactive but the most important thing to do is to be knowledgeable of any plants you bring into your space.
