One of the most well known secrets to healthy plants is rain water!!!
Tap water usually contains fluoride and other chemicals that can be harmful to plants. By using rain water you are feeding your plants softer more natural water. We all know plants need to take in carbon dioxide, but did you know they also need oxygen as well? (photosynthesis... remember the red bean project in school?)
Rainwater contains more oxygen than tap water which allows your plant and its roots to breath!!! When acidic rainwater reaches the soil, it helps to release micronutrients essential to healthy plant growth!!!
Another tip when using rain water is collection and storage. Always be sure to keep rain water sealed especially if collected and stored outdoors. Rain water may also contain some organic matter in the form of insect larvae or algae. The best way to prevent this from happening is to seal your rain water and if possible keep in area with minimum light. Another way to keep your rain water clean is empty your water once a week and clean the container.
Although I’ve personally never tried, I’ve seen my grandmother use organic coconut oil in her water. The oil is used to separate the water and form a barrier at the top in which larva can’t survive.
Last thing, a mesh netting is great for filtering debris and bugs...you can find mesh netting’s in any fabric department at your local stores or online.
Collecting rain water isn’t hard..be creative and use those old pots and washed out milk jugs!! I promise your plants will love you for it!!
